Mafra

Mafra is a historic town located about 40 km from Lisboa, best known for its palace-monument and tranquil atmosphere. The city grew around the Portuguese royal court in the 18th century and still retains traces of that grandeur. It is surrounded by rural landscapes, traditional small shops and is an excellent base for exploring the western region.

Beyond the Monastery, Mafra offers attractions such as the Jardim do Cerco and the Tapada Nacional, a former royal hunting reserve with trails, wildlife and outdoor activities. The town center is calm, ideal for walking and discovering local gastronomy, especially convent sweets.

Mafra Monastery (visit)

The Mafra Palace-Monastery is one of the most monumental works of Portuguese baroque, commissioned by King João V in the 18th century. It houses a royal palace, a convent, a basilica and an immense library with over 36,000 rare volumes. The ensemble impresses with its size and artistic and architectural richness.

The visit allows you to explore royal apartments, the church's high choir with six historic organs, the cloisters, the infirmary and the magnificent library, where bats still live to protect the books. Sobreiro

The village of Sobreiro is a picturesque place on the outskirts of Mafra, famous for housing "José Franco", a living museum that recreates rural Portuguese life in the 20th century. There, artisans continue to work clay, producing traditional pieces in view of visitors.

The place is charming for families and children, with miniature houses, a school, a mill and workshops. Ericeira

Ericeira is a charming coastal village, famous for its surf beaches and relaxed atmosphere. It was Europe's first World Surfing Reserve and attracts practitioners from around the world for its consistent waves and variety of breaks.

But it's not just about surfing — the cobblestone streets, white and blue houses, and fresh fish restaurants enchant every visitor.

The village maintains an authentic spirit, blending tradition and modernity. At the end of the afternoon, it is common to see surfers with boards in the streets and families strolling by the sea. Viewpoints such as Praia do Sul provide incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Ribeira d'Ilhas (Viewpoint)

Ribeira d'Ilhas is one of Ericeira's most iconic beaches and one of the best surf spots in Europe. It hosts World Championship stages and has a stunning natural setting: a green valley opening towards the sea, with perfect waves and constant surfer activity.

Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz is a coastal village on the Portuguese west coast, known for its dramatic cliffs, wide sandy beaches and tranquil atmosphere. It is very popular in summer but still preserves a calmer atmosphere than other more urbanized beaches. The strong sea attracts surfers and photographers.

The landscape is marked by unique rock formations such as "Penedo do Guincho". The seaside promenade invites relaxed walks, and there are many cafés with terraces perfect for enjoying the view. Santa Cruz combines raw nature with the comfort of a welcoming coastal village.

Buddha Eden Garden

Buddha Eden Garden, located in Bombarral, is the largest oriental garden in Europe. Created in response to the destruction of the Giant Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan, the 35-hectare space houses hundreds of Buddhist statues, lakes with koi carp, palm trees, African sculptures and contemporary art.

The visit is an experience of peace and contemplation, ideal for slow walks, photos and meditation. Electric carts facilitate access to the site, and there is a shop and restaurant. It is one of Portugal's most surprising destinations — a small "Orient" in the heart of Ribatejo.
